The HIMSS NYS Chapter invites its interested members to apply for our open Board position outlined below.

Important: this announcement provides all details needed in order to apply to be a Candidate for the open Board position.

Open Board Position: There is one open Board position at this time: Board Member at Large. The Board member will be elected through a general election process and the elected member will serve the remainder of a (2) year term ending June 30^th, 2024.

Board Member Responsibilities

• Duty of Care: Take care of the nonprofit by ensuring prudent use of all assets, including facility, people, and good will;
• Duty of Loyalty: Ensure that the nonprofit's activities and transactions are, first and foremost, advancing its mission; Recognize and disclose conflicts of interest; Make decisions that are in the best interest of the nonprofit corporation; not in the best interest of the individual board member (or any other individual or for-profit entity).
• Duty of Obedience (Compliance): Ensure that the nonprofit obeys applicable laws and regulations; follows its own bylaws; and that the nonprofit adheres to its stated corporate purposes/mission.

Candidate Qualifications

The Candidate must 

• have had three (3) years of healthcare experience at the time of their application
• be a HIMSS member and NYS Chapter member in good standing for at least one (1) year at the time of application
  • Not only a Chapter member
  • Not only a Student member
  • Not only a Retiree member
• have demonstrated leadership skills, strong business acumen and a commitment to perform in an orderly and responsible manner, all duties of the office
• conduct all their activities in a professional and diplomatic fashion and in accordance with our code of conduct
• embrace the values and mission of the Chapter especially in the area regarding membership
• follow an ethical path in all activities representing the Chapter

Level of Commitment

The level of commitment is typically a monthly one-hour Board meeting (held virtually), involvement in the committee of your choice (usually two hours per month), and various planning, mentoring, and networking activities totaling another 3 hours per month. Board members often accept special assignments such as policy review and procedure development and may be asked to serve as chair of any ad hoc committee formed. The entire Chapter operates virtually so the need for travel and time away from the office is minimal.

Attributes of the Positions

This is a Senior level position for an individual that wishes to operate in a true Boardroom environment where the success of the Chapter is established and then operated through various committees and task force groups. The successful candidate enjoys working in an organization at the highest levels where goals are established, and expectations met through the guidance and mentoring of others. The ability to engage at the highest levels with State and Federal agencies in our efforts to change healthcare is a core competency and one that a candidate should have a strong desire for.

Job Description

Board Member-at-Large

The Board Member(s)-at-Large positions are required to attend Board and Chapter related functions and provide leadership involvement at the highest levels including the design, development and deployment of programs, initiatives and projects that will improve the overall quality of the membership.  Areas of focus include but are not limited to:

• Planning and scheduling meetings to provide Chapter members and other interested persons an opportunity to share ideas and exchange experiences in the field of healthcare information and management systems;
• Assisting Chapter members and others in developing their knowledge, increasing their effectiveness, and maintaining high-quality standards of performance through continuing education;
• Planning and conducting training and educational programs designed to promote an understanding of information and management systems work in healthcare; and
• Developing and maintaining appropriate relationships with other local and national associations and societies concerned with the improvement of information and management systems.

Election Timeline

• Call for candidates ends Friday August 4th at 11:59pm EST
• Voting begins Tuesday August 8th at 9:00am EST
• Voting ends Monday August 14th at 11:59pm EST 
• Results will be confirmed and communicated by Friday August 18th

What does a candidate need to provide to submit for candidacy?

• Your name;
• Your HIMSS Membership number;
• Your e-mail address;
• A head shot; and
• A brief profile of your background and why you are interested in this position. This last item will accompany your headshot and name in standard election announcement material distributed to the NYS HIMSS Chapter members. Please keep this to less than 500 words.
